Powering Recovery: How EMSCO Helped Restore Temporary Power at Skyline Tower

When a fire at Skyline Tower in St. Paul, Minnesota left the high-rise without power, restoring electrical service became an immediate priority.

NAC Mechanical & Electrical Services needed temporary power distribution equipment while permanent repairs were being addressed. They turned to EMSCO to help source the equipment needed to keep the recovery moving.

The Challenge: Temporary Power After a Building Fire

After a major electrical disruption, waiting for new equipment isn't always practical. Contractors may need temporary distribution equipment quickly so restoration work can continue while damaged systems are inspected and repaired.

For Skyline Tower, NAC needed equipment capable of supporting the temporary power plan for the building — and they needed it without the extended lead times that can come with ordering new equipment.

What EMSCO Supplied

EMSCO supplied a Square D 3000A main-lug-only (MLO) distribution panel configured with:

  • Three 800A feeds
  • One 1200A feed

The equipment was sourced from EMSCO's existing inventory and prepared for the project so NAC could keep the temporary-power work moving.

Why In-Stock Equipment Matters in an Emergency

Electrical equipment doesn't always fail on a convenient schedule. Fires, equipment failures, planned shutdowns and construction projects can all create situations where the required equipment is needed faster than normal manufacturer lead times allow.

Having access to existing equipment gives contractors another option.

EMSCO stocks used, surplus, obsolete and professionally reconditioned industrial electrical equipment, including low- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, busway, bus plugs, motor control and other power distribution equipment.

And because not everything in our warehouse is listed online, a website search doesn't always show every option we may have available.

Temporary Power Equipment When the Schedule Can't Wait

Skyline Tower is one example of where existing inventory helped support an urgent project. EMSCO also rents electrical equipment for temporary-power applications, ranging from individual circuit breakers to complete switchgear lineups.

Temporary equipment can be useful for emergency recovery, planned maintenance, construction, equipment replacement and other situations where permanent equipment isn't yet available.

Need Temporary Power Equipment?

If you're working on an emergency, shutdown or temporary-power project, send EMSCO the equipment requirements, voltage, amperage, manufacturer information and any available nameplate photos.

We'll check our inventory and help determine what equipment options are available.

When You Can't Wait for New Electrical Equipment

Manufacturer lead times don't always line up with the realities of a plant shutdown, equipment failure or project deadline.

When waiting weeks or months for new electrical equipment isn't an option, used, surplus and professionally reconditioned equipment can provide another path forward — especially when the required equipment is already in stock.

That's where EMSCO's inventory makes a difference. We stock a wide range of legacy and current industrial electrical equipment, and we recondition equipment in-house so we can respond quickly when customers need a replacement.

A Square D NW40 Lineup Shipped the Same Day

A food producer needed a Square D NW40 main-breaker lineup and couldn't afford to wait through the normal lead time for new equipment.

EMSCO had the equipment available. We supplied a main-breaker lineup with distribution sections and breakers and shipped the equipment the same day.

The customer didn't have to wait for a new lineup to be manufactured because the equipment they needed was already here.

A Square D Model 6 MCC Lineup Completed in Two Days

In another case, a customer needed a Square D Model 6 motor control center on a much shorter timeline than new equipment could provide.

EMSCO was able to configure the required MCC lineup using equipment from our inventory. The lineup included starter, feeder and VFD buckets and was completed in two days.

For the customer, the important part wasn't whether the equipment came from a factory production schedule. It was getting the right equipment, properly configured, on the timeline the job required.

Why In-Stock Electrical Equipment Matters

Electrical equipment doesn't always fail on a convenient schedule. Projects change. Existing equipment becomes obsolete. A replacement may no longer be available new, or the manufacturer lead time may simply be too long.

EMSCO has spent decades building an inventory specifically for situations like these. Our warehouse includes equipment from manufacturers such as Square D, Eaton/Cutler-Hammer, Westinghouse, GE, Siemens/ITE, Allen-Bradley and others.

Depending on the application, we may be able to help with:

  • Circuit breakers
  • Bus plugs and bus duct
  • Motor control centers and MCC buckets
  • Low-voltage switchgear
  • Transformers
  • Switches and other power distribution equipment

Much of that equipment is used, surplus, obsolete, hard-to-find or professionally reconditioned in-house.

Don't Assume a Long Factory Lead Time Is Your Only Option

If a manufacturer quotes a lead time that doesn't work for your project, or the equipment you need is no longer manufactured, it's worth checking existing inventory before redesigning the system around something new.

Start with the manufacturer, catalog or part number, voltage and amperage. For older or difficult-to-identify equipment, photos of the nameplate and existing equipment can help us identify what you have.

Not everything in EMSCO's inventory is listed online, so don't assume we don't have it just because you can't find an exact match on the website.
